Dental Crowns
A crown can be made of Porcelain, porcelain
fused to metal backing ,Full metal which can be gold .At our
practice we prefer full gold crown for posterior teeth if
the patient accept the gold colour as it is more biocompetible
or we can offer Zirconia crown which can be recommended for
both anterior and posterior teeth. Zirconia crown gives better
colour and more natural look to the tooth. Studies are supporting
the durability and strength of Zirconia crown which is more
acceptable by patients.
A
crown is a hollow shell that covers and caps a prepared tooth
for all different reasons such as:
1.When a tooth has been damaged by caries
and defects. When the decay is large and needs a large filling
to restor the tooth it can fail the filling .There should
be eoungh tooth stracture remained to support the restoration
otherwise a crown will be needed to restor the tooth.
2.When a part of the filling or tooth has
broken off a crown is the best option to prevent further damage
to the tooth.
3.When a tooth has been badly damaged in
an accident.
4.After root canal treatment when the remaining
tooth would be vulnerable to chipping or cracking.
5.For cosmetic reasons when there is a discoulored,
heavy filled tooth ,small pig shape teeth or when there is
a gap in midline .
The missing part of the tooth may first have
to be filled with one of the normal filling materials. The
tooth is then reduced on the top and all sides untill it looks
like an elongated dome .
An impression and other records are taken
and a temporary crown is fitted.
The crown is constructed in Lab and tried
in for fit and, where appropriate, and colour and shape. Finally
the crown is cemented in place.
